Programs approved for Category 5+

EPLT programs can be used for advancement within the TQS categories, and there are a few options to help you get there. We strongly advise that you check with your school district first to find out what is acceptable before you enrol in a program.

How can you get a Category 5+?

1)

Diploma Program - 30 credits

The Faculty of Education offers Diploma programs in many specialized areas. EPLT works with school districts to deliver off-campus diploma programs in areas that are needed in that district. Visit our diploma webpage for off-campus programs, or visit department websites for on-campus options.

2)

Two Certificate Programs - 15 + 15 = 30 credits

You may combine two 15-credit certificate programs to gain the 30 credits required for advancement to Category 5+. We do recommend that you confirm with your district and with TQS that the certificates are accepted in your area before enrolling.

Visit our certificate webpage for information on off-campus and online certificate options, or Faculty of Education department websites for on-campus options.

What is Category 5+?

Some school districts, in their collective agreements, permit a category between 5 and 6 called Category 5+ (30 credits). The collective agreements for each district stipulate what 30 credits and the conditions under which they will accept them. For example, some districts require a mixture of graduate and undergraduate courses only. Other districts will accept only courses taken after the TQS has awarded Category 5 and you have worked for some time before taking the 30 credits. This means that some districts will not accept surplus courses taken during pre-service studies, regardless of UBC’s 18 credits which can be taken before applying formally to the Diploma. Check the collective agreements for the districts to which you apply, if you intend to apply your Diploma to the districts 5+30 category.
