Restorative Justice Summer Institute - 2012

Transforming Education through Peace and Reconciliation

Restorative Justice - UBC Summer Institute imageA five-day, 3 credit UBC course offered through the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy and the Mir Centre for Peace, Selkirk College (Castlegar, BC).

This summer program will deepen your understanding of restorative justice and how its theory and practice relates to education and socialization of our children.  This course will take restorative justice (most recently called transformative justice) far beyond the realm of victim and offender, to provide a framework for not only responding to conflict but also to building cultures of peace in our education system.

Learners will be enriched by local and global perspectives on issues of peace, reconciliation and conflict transformation that will inspire an enhanced ability to teach about peace and justice, and to implement programs and curriculum based on the tenets of transformative justice.

Program Description

Revolving around the core theme of restorative justice, the course will include lectures, a workshop, and day trips to sites rich in culture and peacemaking, including a Doukhobor cultural centre and a World War II Japanese internment camp. Participants will work with an instructor who combines school-teaching experience with a background in global education initiatives for schools and/or communities.

The week will begin with a workshop by Dr. Brenda Morrison, co-director of SFU's Centre for Restorative Justice, titled Safe Schools and Communities: Restoring the Relational Base of Health and Well Being.

  • Dr. Brenda Morrison is an internationally renowned expert on restorative justice – in schools, communities and the criminal justice system.  Through the lens of restorative justice this workshop will build a framework and set of practical tools for re-affirming, repairing and re-building the social fabric that underpins safe schools and communities.

Throughout the program, participants will engage theory with lived experience and will come away with new ideas and practical tools for relating both peace and restorative justice to curriculum outcomes and teaching practice.

The presentations and field experiences of the opening two-day institute at the Mir Centre  will serve as a foundation for three full-day classes designed to bring these experiences into a school context. Course content will be integrated with the BC social studies curriculum across grades K to 12, and assignments will involve finding resources and exploring the use of local history and culture to design relevant hands-on peace education experiences for students and to teach skills, attitudes and behaviors about how to live together more peacefully locally and globally.
