Professional Development for Educators

EPLT delivers professional development courses for teachers and working professionals throughout British Columbia. Faculty of Education courses are delivered in the following formats:

  • Online โ€“ designed to fit into your schedule, complete coursework at your own pace, at home or anywhere.
  • F2F (off-campus) โ€“ delivered on-site in school districts throughout BC and designed to facilitate the schedules of practicing teachers and professionals.
  • Institutes and workshops โ€“ short programs generally offered in a one- or two-week period during the summer. Many of the summer institutes offer credit and non-credit options.

ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION

To register in credit courses offered through EPLT you must be admitted to the UBC Faculty of Education (Vancouver campus). Some of the summer institutes offer non-credit registration for which you do not need to apply for admission. Here are your next steps:

Admissions

For information on admission or re-admission, please visit the Teacher Education Office. For assistance, contact Maureen Shepherd at 604-822-0165.

  • New UBC Students must apply for admission through the Teacher Education Office, UBC Vancouver. You can download the Application for Diploma/Unclassified Students here). Check the Admission Categories below to determine what type of admission will fit your needs.
  • Previous UBC Students must apply for re-admission (Application for Diploma/Unclassified/Visitor form) through the Teacher Education Office.

Admission Categories

  • Unclassified Students. If you wish to enrol in studies not intended to lead to a particular degree or diploma (such as a single course, a summer institute, or a 15-credit certificate program), you can apply as an Unclassified Student. Students with degrees who wish to register in education courses are admitted to the Faculty of Education as Unclassified, 5th year students, and typically already have a recognized degree.
  • Diploma Students. If you wish to complete a 30-credit UBC-conferred post-degree diploma, apply for admission in this category, and be sure to indicate the specific Diploma program you are applying to.
  • UBC-Okanagan Students (Cross-Campus Registration) - All UBC-O students must contact Jo-Anne Chilton (email or 604-822-3999) for assistance in registering for UBC-Vancouver Faculty of Education courses. You must obtain approval in writing from UBC-Okanagan Faculty of Education advisor. Visit the UBC-Okanagan Academic Advising webpage for information.

TUITION AND FEES

Tuition

For current UBC tuition, visit UBC Tuition Fees and scroll down to "Exceptions" at the bottom of the page to find the Education per credit tuition fees.

Note that fees are subject to change by the University.

Student Assessed Fees

Certain additional fees apply to students who take courses on campus.

In the case of the U-Pass and AMS Extended Health and Dental Plan, students who meet certain requirements may opt out of paying the fees during the first two weeks of the term.

To see whether you qualify for the U-Pass fee exemption, read the U-Pass FAQ information.

If you think you qualify for an exemption, using your CWL ID and password logon to the student service centre and click on the Financial Summary tab to navigate to the U-Pass fee exemption page.

Students registered in on-campus courses in the Summer Session are not assessed Health/Dental Plan fees.

You can also find out whether the AMS Extended Health and Dental Plan fee applies to you by visiting the Student Service Centre.  If you already have medical/dental coverage (other than BC MSP), you may be able to apply for an exemption if you meet certain requirements and follow the necessary procedures.

Tuition Fee Certificates - Teachers

If you are a teacher and have a Tuition Fee Certificate, you can use the certificate to register in most of our courses.  They may be applied to credit and non-credit registration, including summer institutes.  The certificate only covers the cost of tuition, it does not cover the cost of course materials or any other fees.  Most courses are 3-credits, so if your Tuition Fee Certificate is less than 3-credits you will need to pay the difference.  For more information, contact Jeanette Hansen (604-822-2013).

All certificates must be mailed, or delivered, to:

Jeanette Hansen
UBC Faculty of Education (EPLT)
1304 - 2125 Main Mall
Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z4

If you are registering for non-credit, please register for your course through the online registration option and select "Tuition Fee Certificate" as your payment method, and then send or deliver your certirficate to the address above.

NON-CREDIT

Some EPLT courses can be taken for non-credit, usually with a limited number of seats available. This category is for students who are interested in the course content for professional development, but do not wish to obtain credit. If a final grade is required, you must apply for admission to UBC and be admitted BEFORE the course begins ... you can not change your status afterwards.

  • Application. You are not required to apply for admission, but you must complete the online registration through the course webpage and send full payment to confirm your seat.
  • Non-Credit FAQs.  We strongly recommend that you review the FAQ page for additional information on non-credit course registration.
