Teaching English as a Second Language

international students studying together outside.This certificate program is sponsored by UBC's Department of Language & Literacy Education and Ritsumeikan University (Graduate School of Language Education).

  • Earn a certificate for teaching English as a second/foreign language that is respected by major BC school districts
  • The 15 transferable university credits are among the prerequisites for entrance to M.A. and M.Ed. programs in TESL/TEFL at UBC
  • Study with visiting Japanese teachers
  • Consider a practicum in a school in Kyoto, Japan

Courses

The 15-credit certificate program consists of the following courses. The courses held in Japan will be offered in the summer session only. See Schedule below for current offerings.

Program at Ritsumeikan

  • All UBC students accepted into the program must register in both LLED 478C/96A (6-credit course) and the required LLED 399/96A (3-credit practicum).
  • All students must have completed the pre-requisites (see below).
  • Practica will be at Ritsumeikan Uji Junior and Senior High School. Accommodation will be at a 'weekly mansion' (short-term rental) near the Ritsumeikan campus.

Dates: July 2 - August 8, 2012
Tuition: UBC Tuition - 9 credits at Education rate.
In addition, students are responsible for payment of all other expenses, including airfare and accommodation.

+Prerequisites

Six credits of LLED 489 is the required prerequisite for LLED 478C and LLED 399/96A and must be completed before enrolling in LLED 478C/96A and LLED 399/96A offered in Kyoto.  If you have not completed LLED 489, you will not be able to attend the two courss offered in Japan in the summer session.

Students can either provide evidence of having taken LLED 489A (3 credits) plus LLED 489B (3 credits), OR LLED 489C (6 credits).
