Indigenous Knowledges & Indigenous Pedagogies

UBC M.Ed. Cohort - Vancouver School Board (VSB)

This M.Ed. will focus on school and classroom processes and practices that support Aboriginal learners using educational frameworks, theory and approaches that focus on Indigenous knowledge. The goals of this M.Ed. include:

  1. to build educators’ knowledge, understanding and pedagogic skills about Indigenous education and Indigenous knowledge;
  2. to challenge existing curriculum frameworks and structures so that educators may experience an Indigenous worldview and Indigenous knowledge and pedagogies; and
  3. to provide new professional development opportunities for learning about and practicing Indigenous pedagogies and ways of knowing and the thoughtful and strategic ways to implement these in education curricula and programming.

The 2012-14 cohort of the M.Ed in Indigenous Knowledges and Pedagogies is hosted by the Department of Language and Literacy Education and the office of Indigenous Education in the UBC Faculty of Education. This program will also be supported  by other departments and centres within the Faculty of Education. Students would thus have the opportunity to engage in intersecting communities of learning (within departments; and across departments as part of the community focused on Indigenous education).

Dr. Jo-ann Archibald and Dr. Jan Hare will co-lead this cohort. Indigenous and non-Indigenous faculty with expertise in Indigenous Education will teach the courses. This cohort is offered in partnership with the Vancouver School Board.

If you wish to submit references by mail, the referee’s signature must appear across the sealed flap of the envelope to ensure confidentiality. The form is available here.

APPLICATION REMINDERS:

  • We need sealed transcripts from EVERY post-secondary institution you attended, whether or not they issued you a degree, except UBC. If you are a UBC alumnus, please provide your student number and we will print your transcript.
  • If you have transcripts, please enclose or fax us photocopies, including the transfer key(s) on the reverse of the page (604-822-2015). We can make a quick adjudication of your eligibility even before all of your official documents arrive. Please note that this adjudication is not official until we have received your sealed transcripts.
  • Send everything – EVERYTHING – to the attention of Fiona Czeschel at EPLT (1304-2125 Main Mall, Vancouver, BC, V6T 1Z4). The most common delay in admissions is caused by the search for documents that are sent to other locations on this huge campus.
  • It is preferred that references be submitted electronically: when you submit your application, include the referee's email address. This will generate an automatic email which contains a link to a site where your referee can enter his/her reference, and then submit it. They can type as much as they want, despite the apparent size of the text box. This link will only be available when your application is submitted. If you plan on having your referee(s) submit a reference by mail, please leave the email address blank on the application.
  • If you decide to submit any or all of your references by hard copy you can download the reference form for this program here. A letter can take the place of the reference form but it must answer the questions posed in the reference form. The reference form is designed for professors to fill out. If your referee is not a professor, please ask him or her to write about your ability to successfully complete a graduate degree in this particular focus.
  • IMPORTANT: Reference letters submitted by mail must be received here in sealed envelopes with the referee's signature written across the sealed envelope flap.

Please contact Fiona Czeschel (604-822-1876, or toll-free in North America at 1-888-492-1122) if you are having problems with the application process.
