Master of Museum Education - MMEd
Full-Time, One Year Cohort Program at UBC
The Master of Museum Education is a unique graduate degree program focusing on teaching and learning outside of a classroom setting while bringing together museum educators, community-based educators and classroom teachers. Museum professionals, educators and those with an interest in using the community to support teaching and learning are calling for graduate programs about museum education to further their thinking about the potential of museums as sites of learning.
As museums contemplate new roles within society it will be incumbent upon museum professionals, and particularly museum educators, to become catalysts for different ways of thinking about the educational roles and potentials of museums and other informal learning sites, teaching and learning in museum settings as well as exploring new relationships between museums and the broader community. This program will provide the necessary skills and knowledge for careers as educators in informal settings such as museums, locally and globally, and to support classroom-based teachers in expanding their use of the community as a learning site. The program model is one that recognizes the need for contextualizing museum education curriculum in both home country context (which has its own unique social and political context) and in the Canadian cultural context of museum education, in which practices may be conceptualized in other beneficial ways to that of the student’s own country of origin. The end result are graduating students that are then better able to influence the systems in their own countries with strengthened capacities to introduce beneficial reforms around museum education.
Upon completing the MMEd degree, students will be able to:
- Critically analyze dominant and alternative theories and discourses of learning and teaching in informal settings
- Identify the influences of multiple perspectives (i.e., Local, Aboriginal, International) in facilitating learning experiences in/within museums and communities
- Develop learning opportunities to integrate learning within classrooms, and learning in informal settings such as museums and other informal learning sites
- Develop tools to implement and sustain educational programs outside the traditional classroom
- Develop skills and knowledge to understand and address the increasing complexities of issues facing informal learning settings
- Evaluate the potential for working with a variety of learning communities
- Analyze different approaches to teaching and program development, settings, and perspectives

The UBC M.M.Ed. program is a 30-credit program (i.e., students will be required to complete ten 3-credit courses for the degree). The final 3-credits of the program may be a capstone project, which will be developed from original research conducted by students.
Classes in this program will begin the week of September 3, 2012 and finish the week of August 5, 2013.

+Requirements
The basic admission requirement to the Master's program is an approved bachelor's degree. In addition, successful applicants typically have high grades; a coherent, well-written statement of intent; and strong references. Teaching experience is preferred.
All students must meet UBC Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements which include:
- An approved Bachelor's degree and, for K-12 teachers, one year of teacher education, OR
- A 5-year Bachelor's degree in Education; OR
- A 4-year Bachelor's degree in Education or other appropriate area provided the applicant has completed all the necessary prerequisites listed below.
- A GPA of B+ (76%) or equivalent.
- For transcripts from universitys in China, this usually corresponds to an 85% on most PRC university grading systems. If applicant is from a Key University, the minimum grade requirement is B (=80% on PRC grading scale) or higher.
TOEFL Scores
Applicants are required to submit a satisfactory official score report from one of the following organizations, obtained no more than two years prior to the application date:
- TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language, minimum score 580 (paper-based) or 237 (computer based), or new minimum TOEFL score of 92 (with a minimum of 22 for each component).
- IELTS - International English Language Testing System. Minimum overall band score 7.0, with no component less than 6.5.
The official score reports must be sent directly by the testing organization to this department: Institution Code 0965, Department Code 85.

In addition to your on-line application, please forward:
- Two official (sealed) transcripts from all post-secondary institutions (except from UBC) you have attended.
- If the official transcript does not indicate the degree name and the degree conferral date, then two official copies of the degree certificate are required.
- Include both original language and official English translations (usually provided by the university) of all transcripts and degree certificates.
- Three letters of reference from referees who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications for completing a Master of Museum Education degree. It is strongly recommended that references be submitted electronically (by filling in the referee's email address when completing the online application). If you wish to submit references by mail, they must be sealed and endorsed by the referee. The form is available here.
- Resumé and a 600-word statement of intent about your provide a statement of intent of your career goals and explain clearly why you wish to take this particular focus in Museum Education.

- Read the instructions, and click on "Create Your Account" (unless you have already begun your application, in which case you should "Login")
- Once you have created your account, choose "New Application" and then click on "Start a Completely New Application"
- Under "Degree Selection," choose "Master of Museum Education" in the pulldown menu
- Under "Specialization," you must choose "M.M.Ed. – Master of Museum Education – MED1"
- Please make sure you choose the correct specialization, as the Faculty of Graduate Studies will not transfer or refund applications submitted to the wrong degree.

- You will automatically receive an email acknowledgement, with instructions on documentation and deadlines.
Some Application Reminders:
- We need sealed transcripts from EVERY post-secondary institution you attended, whether or not they issued you a degree, except UBC. If you are a UBC alumnus, please provide your student number and we will print your transcript.
- If you have transcripts, please enclose or fax us photocopies (604-822-2015). We can make a quick adjudication of your eligibility even before all of your "official" documents arrive. Please note that this adjudication is not official until we have received your sealed transcripts.
- Send everything - EVERYTHING - to EPLT (1304-2125 Main Mall, Vancouver, BC, V6T 1Z4). The most common delay in admissions is caused by the search for documents that are at other locations on this huge campus.
- It is preferred that references are submitted electronically: when you submit your application, include the referees' email addresses. This will generate an automatic email which contains a link to a site where your referees can enter their reference, and then submit it. They can type as much as they want, despite the apparent size of the text box. This link will only be available when your application is submitted. If you plan on having your referee(s) submit a reference by mail, please leave the email address blank on the application.
- If you decide to submit any or all of your references by hard copy you can download the reference form for this program here. A letter can take the place of the reference form but it must answer the questions posed in the reference form. The reference form is designed for professors to fill out. If any of your referees are not professors, please ask them to write about your ability to successfully complete a graduate degree with this particular focus. Please note: the reference letters must be received at UBC in sealed envelopes with the referee's signature written across the sealed envelope flap.
+Tuition
Tuition for students enrolled in the Master of Museum Education program will be paid over a minimum of three (3) installments in a year. Instalments are payable in September, January and May of each year.
The proposed fees are as follows:
- Domestic students, full-time: CAD$2,300.00
