Home Economics Education Diploma Program

South Vancouver Island

2012 Summer Institutes

See below for information on the two courses being held in Victoria in July 2012.

The Program

The Home Economics Diploma is an in-service program designed to help teachers extend and deepen their knowledge of theory and pedagogy related to teaching home economics in schools.

The program serves those who want to strengthen the current subject area they teach or wish to add a second subject specialization. The program will:

  • Closely examine the new Home Economics IRP's and explore creative ways to address the learning outcomes.
  • Update participants in new developments in textiles, food studies and nutrition.
  • Include an emphasis on health and preparing students to live in a global society.
  • Inspire and develop leadership in home economics curriculum and instruction.

The Vancouver Island HMED program is offered in association with THESA (Teachers of Home Economics Specialist Association), and is delivered through a combination of f2f (on-site) Summer Institutes and online courses to accommodate the schedules of working teachers.

  • The diploma is self-directed; students are responsible for their own registration and course choices.
  • While it is possible for unclassified students to register in individual course (depending upon availibility of seats) that are offered, we recommend that you apply for the Home Economics Diploma program.  As a diploma student, your registration will open earlier than for unclassified students.

Teacher Qualification Service (TQS)

Diploma specializations satisfy the program requirements of the Teacher Qualification Service advancement.
