Digital Literacy Workshops... For Teachers!

The Digital Literacy Centre in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, UBC Faculty of Education, is offering practical, hands-on workshops exploring the value of digital technologies for teachers and students.

These workshops will guide participants in hands-on sessions to understand the possibilities of using collaborative software in the classroom, and offer a number of examples that can be implemented in the classroom.

Each workshop is limited to 10 participants, early registration is strongly recommended! Seats are confirmed on a first-come-first-served basis.

Cost: $100 per workshop

Saturday, November 28 10:00am - 1:30pm	SMARTboards - Interactive Whiteboards Instructor: Melanie Wong SMARTboards?! Are you kidding? SMARTboards are a valuable tool in any classroom! They are effective at increasing student motivation and increasing attention to the task. They are an innovative and powerful tool for language acquisition and also an effective tool to use with students with disabilities. If you have ever wondered how to use a SMARTboard, then this is your chance to learn. The one-day workshop will focus on the basics of use, exploring in an interactive, hands-on format, the beneficial capabilities of Smart Technologies Notebook software, and how the board works with software like Microsoft Office or for presentation display. There will also be a discussion on practical classoom applications. The first workshop is about social media for collaborative writing. The participants will be introduced to wiki, a popular tool for online writing projects. During the workshop, we will present the range of wikis available online for use in classrooms, demonstrate the multimedia features that can be incorporated with the text, and then collectively generate a digital narrative starting with a given “mystery” scenario. We will complete the workshop with a Q and A about special wiki features that enhance its pedagogical application. Participants will receive an email invitation to join our wiki site and are requested to bring a digital camera and cable (if they have one) to download pictures onto the computer.

Saturday, November 21	Social Media in the Classroom This workshop has been cancelled. She has been involved with the UBC program since the late 1980’s combining university teaching with teaching in public schools. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction in Home Economics Education and also has a keen interest in Global Education, Health Education and supporting local agriculture. Her research interests include using action research as a framework for professional development and exploring the historical and philosophical roots of home economics. She has taught graduate courses in home economics, action research and research methods and undergraduate courses in home economics, health, global education, food studies and agriculture in the classroom.

Instructor Bios:

Melanie Wong is a Masters student at the University of British Columbia. Melanie has used SMARTboards and Notebook software extensively for the Calgary Board of Education. She is passionate about using technology for both training other teachers in the benefits, and to aid her ESL students in their learning. Her other interests include Assistive Technology and distributed learning environments.

Maryam Moayeri is a teacher and a PhD student at the University of British Columbia. She was recently awarded the Prime Minister's Award for teaching excellence. She is currently researching how teachers are incorporating internet practices into the curriculum and how youth are using the internet to learn.
