Drama Literacies and Literature
The drama summer institute invites new and experienced teachers, together with researchers, to explore connections between drama and literature through readings and practical activities.
A variety of drama strategies (i.e., role play, tableaux, hot-seat) will be introduced to provide teachers with ways of increasing enjoyment of literature (poems, short stories, picture books, information books, novels) in shared work with their students. Each day will begin with
1) initiating activities to create a community of learners,
2) developing activities to inquire about drama and literacy theory and practice, and
3) culminating activities to explore the drama and literature connection.
The drama-based activities will explore literacy in multiple ways, and exposure to reading, writing, seeing, listening, and speaking strategies will be central to the learning through drama. Daily readings about drama and literacy will provide theoretical and scholarly perspectives on the work participants are engaging in during the institute.
Because the course is cross-listed at the 400 and 500 levels, the final assignment will differ for participants (400s will focus more on classroom-based ideas; 500s on research-based issues). Participants will be encouraged to bring in literature they currently (or would like to) explore in their classes.
