Pre-Congress Institute: July 12 - 16, 2010

The International Systemic Functional Linguistics Association, with the support of UBC's Department of Language and Literacy Education, is pleased to offer a Pre-Congress Institute as a lead-in to the 37th International Systemic Functional Congress.

The institute offers the following three non-credit courses:

  • An Introductory Course in SFL
  • Applicable Discourse Analysis
  • Intonation in the Grammar of English.

It is possible to take both the advanced grammar and discourse and the grammar and intonation courses during the Institute.

In addition, Noted Summer Scholar Professor Gunther Kress will teach a graduate course in visual image analysis. Read more.

  An Introductory Course in SFL

 

1:00 - 5:00pm
Monday - Friday

For people wanting to learn about possible uses of the theory and descriptions it enables in practical contexts, including particularly educational contexts, taught by Dr Annabelle Lukin, Macquarie University, Australia. No prior knowledge of the theory or its descriptive resources will be assumed.

Applicable Discourse Analysis

 

8:30am - 12:30pm
Monday - Friday

An advanced course in grammar and discourse, taught jointly by Professor Christian Matthiessen,Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Dr Kazu Teruya, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This course is for people with some background in systemic functional linguistics, who want to deepen their knowledge of its analytic resources, particularly in lexico-grammar.

This institute is based on the recent book with this title (Intonation in the Grammar of English, M.A.K.Halliday and William S. Greaves, Equinox), taught by Emeritus Professor Bill Greaves, Glendon College, Canada.

UBC Graduate Course in Visual Image Analysis

We are pleased to announce that Professor Gunther Kress will teach a UBC graduate course in visual image analysis in the Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED) during the week of the Pre-Congress Institute.

  • Enrollment: If you are interested in taking this course for credit, please contact LLED’s Graduate Secretary, Ms Anne Eastham for information about the enrollment process.  (Please note that UBC’s standard graduate course fee applies; five places will be available for non-UBC students.)

Noted Summer Scholar, 2010

Professor Kress will be visiting UBC as Noted Summer Scholar for 2010, Language and Literacy Education Department, and will give a public lecture during the Pre-Congress Institute week.  Further details will be posted here and on LLED’s website as they become available.
